Premium Intensive English Program (IEP)
|
The Premium Intensive English program offers language instruction with an integrated approach that includes four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The specific courses under these programs also include the incorporation of pronunciation, vocabulary building and conversation activities using grammar in context. Extra curricular academic activities such as field trips to museums, historical sites, observation of NYC life and film showing are provided to enhance and to reinforce English proficiency.
Program choices:
Premium IEP - Manhattan only: 4 hours of instruction per day, five days a week, plus
additional activities (20 hrs. / week)
The Premium IEP curriculum includes four proficiency levels:
> I Beginner
Courses provide you with basic communication skills and English grammar. You learn to construct simple to complex sentences and develop vocabulary skills to be able to participate in small group discussions.
> II Intermediate
Courses develop your awareness of the relationship of grammar to meaning. You learn to participate in big group discussions and practice giving short talks. You develop fluency in speaking and writing.
> III High Intermediate
Courses enhance your ability to communicate with and understand English speakers. You increase grammatical accuracy in writing and speaking and develop your reading comprehension.
> IV Advanced
Courses further develop your fluency in speaking, reading, listening and speaking. You attain a high command of vocabulary words and idioms to help you participate in class discussions. You acquire a stronger grammar foundation, develop your ability to react to readings and enhance active listening skills.

Advanced - Academic Courses
|
These courses are designed for advanced level ESL students. The main goal is to provide students with adequate English proficiency to perform academic reading/writing and speaking/listening tasks. Students will acquire the appropriate skills in giving oral presentations, taking comprehensible notes, self correcting for accuracy in writing and speaking, writing multi-essay compositions and simple academic papers as well as reinforcing critical thinking.
The courses present an integrated approach in language acquisition for academic life and career.

Intensive Pronunciation & Accent Reduction
|
Study the sounds, rhythms and intonation of North American English. This course
is taken in our multimedia computer lab dedicated to helping you with pronunciation and accent reduction. In the lab, we analyze speech from American films and music to give you real examples of everyday English. Then, on the computers, you will analyze your own speech by recording your voice, literally seeing a picture of it on the screen, comparing it with the speech of a native speaker, finding errors, and correcting your speech.
Length of program:
Eight weeks with four hours of instruction per day, five days a week.

Intensive TOEFL Program
|
This course prepares students to take the national TOEFL test in either of two formats: computer-based or paper-based. It provides a very comprehensive review of all the components needed for the TOEFL test such as written structures (grammar), reading comprehension, listening comprehension and essay writing. It provides a thorough discussion on the techniques and strategies for taking the test. Students are given free access to the computer lab to do a complete practice TOEFL test.
Length of program:
Ten weeks with four hours of instruction per day, five days a week.

Intensive IELTS Preparation course
|
This course helps learners develop detailed knowledge of English skills and strategies needed for success to pass the IELTS exam. It emphasizes in improving academic English as well as the linguistics aspects of the course. It includes vocabulary and grammar tasks, skills building and exam practice tasks. It is consists of four modules with corresponding exercises, tasks and practice tests.
Length of program:
The program will consist of two sessions, four weeks per session and four hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Intensive Business English Program
|
This course includes instruction in U. S. business practices, business writing and speech & oral presentation. It enriches vocabulary and builds accurate grammar usage. It provokes and reinforces critical thinking by analyzing cases of success stories of various businesses in the U.S., and how they relate to other businesses globally. The students are led on field trips to financial and business districts, and they attain a better perspective of the business environment.
Length of program:
Twelve weeks with four hours of instruction, five days a week.

The 11 courses in Phase I are designed to prepare you to communicate efficiently in the real world.

Course 101 Survival English
|
This course introduces you to practical English and promotes the ability to speak it confidently. You will understand simple spoken sentences and questions.

Course 102 3-Way Conversation
|
This course helps you improve conversation and listening skills. You will be able to gradually build writing skills and write simple compositions.
|
Course 103 Paths to Everyday Conversation
|
This course enhances your communication skills. You will be able to express yourself and understand basic structures and meanings in various contexts.

Course 204 Intermediate Conversation
|
This course helps you increase oral fluency and vocabulary usage. You will be able to improve construction of sentences, using correct grammar and appropriate words.

Course 205 Grammar and Conversation
|
This course reinforces the use of accurate grammar. You will be able to speak confidently and demonstrate a strong grammar basis through your speech and compositions.

Course 206 Advanced Conversation
|
This course provides expansion exercises and activities using advanced grammar structures. You will be able to express your ideas better and speak confidently because of your strong grammar foundation.

Course 307 Real Situations
|
This course presents a clear understanding of the use of spoken English in real-life situations. You will be able to express yourself and handle various roles in everyday life.

Course 308 Introduction to Idioms
|
This course introduces you to the use of appropriate idioms through reading, writing, listening and dialogues. You will be able to develop your oral fluency by using American idioms in context.

Course 409 Introduction to Reading
|
|
This course improves your speaking abilities through the use of expanded vocabulary. It helps improve your reading comprehension, and you will be able to acquire a deeper insight into life situations presented in short stories.

Course 410 Introduction to Writing
|
This course introduces you to the fundamentals of paragraph writing. You will acquire the tools to be able to put your ideas into writing in a coherent and organized manner.

Course 511 Introduction to Speech
|
|
This course focuses on techniques to conduct various forms of oral presentations. You will be able to develop and confidently deliver demonstrative, informative and persuasive speeches.

These ten courses are designed to prepare you for a successful academic life and obtain professional advancement. You should already have very good communication skills to be in this program.

Course 612 Listening Practice I

This course develops and improves listening comprehension. You are exposed to numerous native
speakers discussing interesting topics.

This course is an advanced grammar course that prepares advanced students to develop and master language skills using accurate grammar for speaking and writing

Course 816 Cultural Awareness
|
This course is designed to enhance communication through cultural awareness. It will help you to adapt to American culture and motivate you to discuss and share your own culture.

Course 817 Reading II
|
This course increases your vocabulary and enhances your ability to interpret meaning and share bright ideas. You will sharpen your reading comprehension, oral and writing skills.

Course 818 Writing II
|
This course prepares you for different writing tasks required in college and graduate study programs such as essays & rhetorical writing. You will be given extensive writing practice and apply appropriate techniques and mechanics of writing.

Course 819 Listening II
|
This course further develops and improves your listening comprehension skills. It cultivates note-taking and summarizing skills. You will improve your listening comprehension and be more prepared to take part in and stimulate conversation.

Course 820 Critical Thinking
|
This course helps you develop critical thinking skills. You will discuss controversial issues of international interest to motivate you to form your views and opinions. All four skills--reading, writing, speaking and listening--are developed.

Course 821 Writing III
|
This course prepares you for various writing tasks required in college and job-related activities. You will acquire appropriate writing skills needed for academic and technical writing.

ELECTIVE ENGLISH COURSES |
Elective courses are special classes designed to supplement and reinforce language acquisition. Students with an advanced level of English proficiency have the option of choosing these courses to enhance their four skills and attain a higher level of English proficiency. These courses help improve specific skills in preparation for greater career opportunities.

Pronunciation and Accent Reduction I
|
| This course will help you become more aware of your pronunciation and the pronunciation of native speakers of North American English. You will be able to use various features of English pronunciation, know its rules and recognize sounds and exchange information with other students. |
Pronunciation and Accent Reduction II
|
This course reinforces speaking and listening skills. You gain the ability to understand and use the spoken language using good pronunciation and appropriate accent.

Current Events
|
The objective of this course is to improve reading & language skills through the use of high-interest newspaper articles. It integrates critical analysis, writing, speaking and a wide array of language skills.

Academic Vocabulary I & II
|
| These courses expose you to a study of vocabulary that is enjoyable and practical. You learn new words used for various contexts needed for college study. Some words will likely appear on standardized tests such as the TOEFL, SAT & GRE. You will be exposed to vocabulary from various fields such as the arts, business, science and math. |
College Preparatory
|
This course is a bridge to college success. It provides strategies for success and study skills to prepare you for college.
|
American Culture/Film
|
This is an interactive course in American culture using films depicting American life. You are exposed to American ways and are able to see the similarities/differences to your own culture. It reinforces your language skills through the use of idioms, vocabulary, phrasal verbs and other contemporary English expressions used in films.

Free Conversation Classes

Every Friday, Zoni offers you the opportunity to practice your English informally with other students and teachers. These conversation classes are divided into groups, based on your command of English and your level of oral proficiency.
